With their unique geological formations, our region’s rock faces boast a wealth of grips and routes that climbers will love. Often located close to hiking trails, they are easily accessible and offer breath-taking views over the surrounding Alps.

An activity for everyone

In Flaine, climbing can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of your age or level. Our experienced instructors are on hand to ensure beginners familiarise themselves with safety guidelines and get to grip with the basics. More advanced climbers will find Flaine’s climbing routes on the free «Flaine Les Carroz Espace Outdoor» app, listed with their name, level, access and topos, so that you can push back your limits and conquer new summits.

What is via ferrata?

Via ferrata (iron path), is a combination of hiking and climbing in the mountains that allows thrill-seekers of all levels to climb over the rock faces in total safety using specialist equipment. The routes are fitted with cables, ladders, bridges, and zip lines for a unique experience between earth and sky.

The stunning natural setting of the northern Alps is the perfect place to learn or improve on the via ferrata  routes surrounding Flaine.

The routes are designed to offer an adventure that’s accessible to everyone, with the promise of breath-taking panoramic views over the surrounding mountains. Here are a few reasons why you should add this activity to your list:

  • Safety first: The via ferrata routes are regularly maintained and secured so that everyone can embark on an adventure with total peace of mind. Experienced guides are also available to accompany you and teach you the basics.

The closest via ferrata are Curala in Passy (about an hour’s drive) and the Mont via ferrata in Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval (about an hour’s drive).

Before you set off, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your experience:
  • Kit yourself out properly – a helmet, climbing shoes, harness, chalk bag, rope, carabiners, and a belayer for climbing. A helmet, harness, and lanyard for via ferrata, as well as comfortable and appropriate hiking boots.
  • Stay hydrated and safe – take plenty of water and sun cream with you, as well as appropriate clothing depending on weather conditions.
