Don’t forget to take the time to admire the Platé Desert and its breath-taking views over Mont Blanc; with its lunar landscape, this hidden gem of the Alps is a veritable natural wonder.
Leaving from Flaine, the Grandes Platières cable car takes you to the summit of the Grandes Platières at 2,500 m or, for the more courageous, on foot via the GR 96. An unforgettable surprise at the top, with a breathtaking 360° view of the surrounding mountains: the Mont-Blanc, Aravis, Belledonne and Jura ranges…
Facing Mont Blanc, this 1980-hectare limestone plateau is made up mainly of lapiaz, carved out by glaciers and meltwater. Recognised as one of the largest lapiaz in Europe, the Platé plateau is only accessible on foot, earning it the name ‘desert’.
Listed since 1998 as an area of outstanding landscape interest, the Platé desert attracts visitors thanks to its extraordinary appearance. A vast limestone plateau shaped by glaciers and sculpted by meltwater, hikers who venture here have the impression of walking on a petrified glacier or even on the moon!
Surrounded by imposing walls, the Désert de Platé is a secret garden that will delight all nature lovers with its rich flora, abundant fauna and spectacular geology. You’ll find fossil evidence of a mountain that formed a seabed 40 million years ago!
Access to the Désert de Platé & the Mont-Blanc view from Flaine Forum via the Grandes Platières cable car (15 min): open from 28 June to 31 August 2025, 9am to 5pm – 7 days a week.
In the event of bad weather, the cable car will be closed all day.
A little extra: at this altitude, you’ll need a warm jacket. Hiking boots or boots with a good grip are necessary to avoid falls and accidents.
